TEACHING LEARNING PERFORMANCE

Teaching Philosophy:

My broad philosophy in teaching is that opportunity must be created in allowing creative and critical thinking to take place in and outside of classes. Along those lines, students need constant encouragement plus motivation to push them to achieve their goals in academic, hence opportunity for a two way communication is always made available.

Teaching statistics for engineering students at the undergraduate level poses few challenges for me as a lecturer; for example, I need to keep students’ attention, interest and develop their abstract thinking in appreciating statistics for their advancement in the engineering field. I normally adopt the following convention when introducing a new concept: first start with motivational anecdote and post a “real-life” analogy on how statistics being applied through series of questions, summarise individual response to form a group opinion, offer comments, then give a formal definition, and finally illustrate it with concrete examples.

I encourage students to pay more attention on understanding concepts and procedures rather than memorizing facts. I deliberately discuss the concept of means, standard deviation and range and how those concepts shall built their fundamental knowledge on scientific method required for engineering project or scientific experiment. When I discuss on the hypothesis testing, I will first explain the basics of hypothesis testing so that they establish the generic procedure for any hypothesis testing. One of the rewards of being a teacher is being able to introduce a whole new world to someone who hasn’t seen it before. The joy is in seeing someone finally “get it”. This is what my goal of teaching is: as opposed to merely giving them formulas, I do everything in my power to encourage students to ask questions during the class or outside the classroom.

I teach QMT 500 the course on statistics and probability for electrical engineering undergraduate, one of the core courses for the bachelor of electrical engineering program. In this course, every semester I will be assigned to a group of students from different specialization: power, communication, electronic or instrumentation. This requires me to be continuously creative in order to maintain multi-specialisation students’ interest in probability and statistics. When I teach undergraduate courses, my goal is to ensure that students feel that the subject material is important to their own field and useful in subsequent classes and later in their career advancement.

I believe that no two students are alike, the way they respond to things we are explaining varies and it is a challenge for a lecturer to guide and facilitate the learning hence requiring more creative and innovative approach in teaching. When explaining a principle, or introducing a new concept, I often do it in the form of a active conversation with students, and create a friendly environment, which makes them free to ask and answer questions without feeling pressured or intimidated. This fosters their understanding of the materials more than just giving explanations. I reward their participation by giving marks and it is recorded in their attendance sheet which later accumulated towards their formative assessment.

I have started using the student centred learning (SCL) approach in my class session. Basically SCL focuses on knowledge being accumulated through active engagement of the students. I normally plan the learning session starting by asking questions that builds towards understanding the concept to be introduced. I started implementing the OBE SCL approach in teaching the QMT 500 during the March 2012 session. Subsequently the following semester I was given a different course STA 500 Nonparametric Statistics which I taught for two semesters. And starting this semester Sept 2013 I am teaching STA766 a master degree course on Quality Standard, Control and Improvement.

At the graduate level, I have also taught a course on Decision Analysis for the Masters of Business Administration (Sarawak) program for three semesters. In that course the students whom consists of matured student with some working experience are expected to master the followings: types of decision making environments, decision making under certainty, decision making under uncertainty, decision making under risk, expected profit with perfect information, expected opportunity loss, expected value of perfect information.

Modern managers today are often required to have specific skills in dealing with inter and intra-departmental collaboration as well as external linkages with other industries or organizations. By and large, a lot of decision-making processes had to be made. This course provides some of the tools that can enhance the right approach to scientific decision making. It covers decision analysis in the environments of certainty, uncertainty and risk as well as decision making in production planning. Furthermore, decisions based on future forecasts as well as decision making based on various criteria are discussed.

Students are introduced to the overall outcome of the program and showed which outcomes are mapped for the course I am teaching. These are the overall outcome of the MBA program, but the course I am teaching are mapped to PO 2, PO5 and PO6.

  1. Able to apply and use ICT skills and new ideas in business environment. (LO1, 2, 7)
  2. Able to analyze and solve problems in specialized business disciplines. (LO 2, 3)
  3. Able to communicate effectively. (LO 4)
  4. Able to lead a team and execute tasks. (LO 5, 9)
  5. Able to evaluate and critique business decision with an ethical framework (LO3, 6)
  6. Able to integrate entrepreneurial skills in the decision making process (LO 8)

They are exposed to rubrics used to assess their performance especially regarding presentation and report writing. I found that this approach helps students to manage their work.

Hence starting this semester I expose my students in other classes on the assessment rubrics and also the meaning and expectation in terms of taxonomy level, for example what is expected when the action verb used in an item using describe means, or the word illustrate means and so on. This, I found to be useful in helping them grasp the concept and hence make them able to apply it to several different scenarios.

Starting March 2012, I have also started using a blended approach where I incorporated an online platform iLEARN, the e-learning platform of the university. I upload the materials to be discussed in class especially video discussing on the basic concept so that students can download as and when needed. In class, they are encouraged to solve problem and discuss materials in group to enhance their higher order thinking skills. In a way I have introduced flipped teaching/ learning right in to my own classroom.

Few of my students do come back to get assistance in doing their Final Year Project especially regarding research methodology and on data analysis.

SUFO is a mechanism used to evaluate lecturer’s performance specifically looking at his or her professionalism and quality of handling teaching learning activities. The score are rated by students enrolled in the class taught by the respective lecturer. The score range from 1 and 4 and the final score is the average number of students in the class that rates the indicators. Score ranging from 80 to 100 are considered excellent.
