Data Deluge: Challenges and Opportunities

Nowadays not just the scientific communities but every organization faces mountains of data, often with conflicting information. In this talk, the speaker will examine various options for dealing with data deluge, and will point out the need for a new enabling technology to support data analysts and decision makers. In particular, the speaker will discuss the definitions of three primary entities, namely data, information and knowledge, and the relationships among them. He will present the state of the art and challenging problems in a variety of information-centric activities, including collection, retrieval, processing, visualization, analysis, and dissemination.

What is Visualization Really for?
Professor Min Chen, University of Oxford

Whenever a visualization researcher is asked about the purpose of visualization, the phrase “gaining insight” by and large pops out instinctively. In this talk, the speaker makes an observation that most uses of visualization are not necessarily for gaining a deep understanding. Hence, “gaining insight” does not seem to be the most appropriate answer for encompassing various uses of visualization in practice, nor offers much theoretical guidance to the advancement of this important technology. The speaker will draw evidence from a number of research projects carried out in Oxford and Swansea, and will examine how a different answer may impact on the research directions in the future.

Prof. Min Chen

Min Chen, BSc, PhD, FBCS, FEG, FLSW

Professor of Scientific Visualization

Prof. Min Chen research areas include volume graphics, video visualization, face modeling, automated visualization, and theory of visualization. He is currently leading visualization activities at Oxford e‐Research Centre, with a team of 7 researchers and applying visualization and visual analytics to a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary research topics, ranging from physical sciences to digital humanities, and from sport events to cybersecurity.
