Doctoral Consortium


What is a Doctoral Consortium?

The Doctoral Consortium provides PhD students working on their dissertation research with an opportunity to share and develop their research ideas, to explore issues related to academic and research careers in the Human Computer Interaction (HCI) field, and to build relationships with other HCI PhD students from around the world. The goal of the Doctoral Consortium is to help students with their thesis and research plans by providing feedback and general advice on using the research environment in a constructive and international atmosphere. However, the consortium is not intended for those who are finished or nearly finished with their dissertation.

The workshop for the doctoral consortium will takes place on a single full day and will be conducted by the HCI expertise. They will review all the submission and comment on the content of the proposal as well as on the presentation. Students will have 20 minutes to present their research, focusing on the main theme of their research, what they have achieved so far and how they plan to continue their work. Another 20 minutes is reserved for discussion and feedback from both the professors and other participants.

Call for Proposals and Topics

Students interested in participating in the Doctoral Consortium should submit a full length of a proposal (see details below) describing their Human Computer Interaction (HCI) topic related research. Submissions relating to any aspect of HCI's development and evaluation are welcomed, including technical advances, usage and impact studies, usability, social and institutional implications, theoretical contributions, interaction and design advances, and innovative in the sciences, humanities, and education. In addition, work submitted to Doctoral Consortium must be at least 9 months towards the student's commencement of their studies.

Application

To apply for participation at the Doctoral Consortium, please provide a full length of your doctoral work to this email, emma@tmsk.uitm.edu.my. The maximum number of pages is four (4) to six (6) excluding references.

Submissions will be judged on originality, significance, correctness, and clarity. Submissions should be done electronically in PDF format. The proposal should outline:

  1. Working title
  2. Abstract
  3. Context/Background - What is the research about? What is the scope? Why is it important?
  4. Clearly formulate the research questions/objectives.
  5. Identify the significant problems in the field of research.
  6. Summarize the current knowledge of the problem domain, as well as the state of the art for solutions.
  7. Clearly present any preliminary research plans and ideas, and the results achieved so far.
  8. Sketch the research methodology that is to be applied.
  9. Describe the expected contributions of the applicant to the research area.

 

For technical research, describes how the research is innovative, novel or extends existing approaches to the problem.

Biosketch – provide a brief biography, including names and affiliation of supervisors, PhD start date and date of expected completion.
